  • 1.  N-1 Principe for application

Just out of interest, does the N-1 principle mentioned in the "Whole of Government Common Operating Environment Policy" still being applied by IT department across the government?

While the approach made sense 10 years ago when software upgrades were not as frequently, it is a bit out of date for the times now.  We're updating our internal software policy at the moment and there is debate whether this is relevant for a policy in 2022.

Looking for everyone's opinion on this.

    Cheers

    Zane

    Hi there Zane,

Unless someone has answered this one already ... and unless I've misread your message - is this one for the DTA WoAG Archicture crew? They have an email address (architecture@dta.gov.au) but I reckon someone from the Digital community might have a direct lead! :'-D

    Cheers, '

    Hi Melissa,

It was a general discussion topic to gauge what other agency's approach is to this topic, it is very old and doesn't reflect how software is developed these days.

Getting a DTA position will be good as well, I will send them an email.

    Regards

    Zane

I see where you are coming from Zane. My department is building on MS365, MSAzure and ServiceNow platforms. n-1 will become more and more meaningless in our world too.... especially as we move from server based to compute based constructs....

See you at the Architecture community!

Glad you can see my concern Iain, I wonder if this has been one of the contributing factors in decision making (investment at least) which has lead to so many burning platforms still being used in government departments.

Great thread Zane, Melissa and Iain - I've reached out to the brains-trusts in the Australian Government Architecture team to seek an answer on this one. Dale
